When I first left Houston two years ago, I wasn’t totally prepared for the emotional and mindset challenges of the nomad life. At times, it felt like I was fighting against uncertainty, self-doubt, frustration, and insecurity on a daily basis.
Without realizing it, I’d sacrificed everything familiar and stable in my life: friends, relationships, routines, work, financial security, medical coverage, and so many other things.
I constantly questioned my choices and wondered if I was crazy for doing this. After all, I didn’t know anyone who’d attempted to leave everything familiar and travel the world as a digital nomad. So I hit the internet to find some encouragement.
But advice from other nomads wasn’t super helpful and often boiled down to: “Don’t give up.” (Well, duh!) Very few people provided actionable advice or guidance to overcome the mindset challenges of this life.
Which left me in unfamiliar situations with questions like:
In the end, developing my mindset and building emotional resilience became a crucial part of being a digital nomad. So when the stress or frustration of this life felt overwhelming, I could draw on my inner strength and keep going.
But I couldn’t always do it alone (I had the help of some amazing and supportive people) – and you don’t have to either. I’m here to provide encouragement and support as you develop your mindset and overcome the challenges of the nomad life.
When I’m stressed or upset, my go-to techniques to calm down are journaling, meditation, or taking a walk. After years of trial and error, I learned these are the best activities for me to find my center when the nomad life feels too chaotic, overwhelming, or uncertain.
The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson. He argues that there’s no such thing as a “Eureka!” moment. But simply small, daily actions that exponentially build over time to lead us to our best (and worst) moments in life. His insights completely altered my mindset and I recommend this book to everyone I know!
Everything we do in life starts in the mind – and everyone should spend time developing their mindset and mental health. To learn about who we are, what we want in life, and where we’re going. So we can grow and evolve into higher, better versions of ourselves.
Hi, I’m Melanie!
A few years ago, I decided I was done with rushed vacations and short stays in exotic places. I wanted to travel for months (or years!) on my schedule. So I set out to make it happen – and I learned a lot along the way. Now, I want to share my knowledge so you can master long-term travel, too.
